We are through Day
1 of the MLB playoffs, and we were treated to four magnificent games.
Everything from great pitching performances to clutch hitting from players in
their playoff debuts. Here is how it went.
Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays: Texas
took Game One of the series 4-0 over Tampa Bay. Jordan Montgomery went seven
strong innings for Texas, allowing six hits and striking out five. Tyler
Glasnow got the loss for Tampa Bay, going five innings, allowing six hits,
three runs, five walks, and eight strikeouts. Rangers' rookie Evan Carter
reached base four times in his playoff debut. Game two will see Nathan Eovaldi
(12-5, 3.63 ERA) take the hill for Texas against Zach Eflin (16-8, 3.50 ERA)
for Tampa Bay.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins: Minnesota was victorious in Game one of the series by a score of 3-1. Twins' rookie, Royce Lewis provided all three runs driven in with two homers in his playoff debut. Twins starter, Pablo Lopez provided five and two thirds strong innings only allowing one run and striking out three. Minnesota’s bullpen surrendered only one hit throughout the remainder of the game. Kevin Keirmaier provided the only run support for Toronto. The Blue Jays will give the ball to Jose Berrios (11-12, 3.65 ERA) to try and win Game two. Minnesota will have Sonny Gray (8-8, 2.79 ERA) looking to close out their first playoff series victory since 2004.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee
Brewers: The Diamondbacks stole Game one of the series with a 6-3 comeback victory
over Milwaukee. Milwaukee took an early lead thanks to a Tyrone Taylor two-run
blast in the 2nd inning. Arizona fired right back with back-to-back
homers from Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. Arizona rookie, Gabriel Moreno had a mammoth homerun that Arizona a 4-3 in the 4th inning. Christian Walker provided insurance
for Arizona in the 9th inning with a two-run double that extended
the Arizona lead from one to three. Both Brandon Pfaadt and Corbin Burnes
struggled on the mound for their respective clubs. Arizona will have Cy Young
finalist Zac Gallen (17-9, 3.47 ERA) on the mound against Freddy Peralta
(12-10, 3.86 ERA) in game two of the series.
Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies took game one over the fish by a score of 4-1. Phillies starter, Zack Wheeler was dominant, going six and two thirds, allowing five hits, one run, and striking out eight. Luzardo struggled for the Marlins, allowing eight hits and three runs in only four innings. The Phillies offensive attack was very balanced with every player in the starting lineup recording a hit. The Marlins will turn to rookie Braxton Garrett (9-7, 3.66 ERA) to try and even the series. Philadelphia will have Aaron Nola (12-9, 4.91 ERA) on the mound looking to clinch the series.
